Wired & Wireless Networking

Wired and wireless networking that works in the far corner office. Wi-Fi that holds up, and switching that does not fall over when you add a floor.

What Makes Wired and Wireless Networking Actually Work?

Most of the “application problems” we investigate turn out to be network problems. A switch runs out of PoE budget. Somebody placed the access points from a floor plan instead of a survey. A cabling run still serves an office you left three moves ago.

Your files, your phones, your security tools and your backups all sit on that layer. So when it is weak, the symptoms surface everywhere except where the fault is.

OPUS Consulting Group is a RUCKUS Elite Partner. We design, install and manage wired and wireless networking on RUCKUS access points, ICX switches and RUCKUS One. We survey the building first, and we answer the phone afterwards.

Good wired and wireless networking is never just a product choice.

What our wired and wireless networking covers

A working network is three things at once. The cabling and switching underneath. The wireless on top. And a management platform that lets somebody see what is actually happening. OPUS delivers all three on the RUCKUS platform. We have been doing network work of this kind for over twenty years.

Typical projects are new offices and build-outs. Others are moves into space somebody else wired. Many are Wi-Fi that nobody ever surveyed, or switch estates that grew one closet at a time. This work sits alongside our IT infrastructure services. For most clients, managed IT then covers it day to day.

We survey the building before we quote the equipment

Access point counts taken off a floor plan are guesses. Buildings are not floor plans. Concrete cores, elevator shafts, foil-backed insulation, glass partitions and metal racking all change where the signal goes. A warehouse stacked to the ceiling behaves nothing like the same square footage of open office.

So we measure first. We survey the existing RF environment and identify the interference you are already living with. Then we confirm what is genuinely in the walls and the closets. Placement, channel plan and power budget follow from that. We also check that the switching and cabling can feed what we are about to hang on the ceiling. A Wi-Fi 7 access point on a switch that cannot power it is an expensive ornament.

RUCKUS access points

RUCKUS builds access points for the environments that defeat ordinary Wi-Fi. Think high client density, Wi-Fi-unfriendly building materials, and exposed outdoor locations. The current indoor range is Wi-Fi 7. It runs from the entry-level R370 through the R575 and R670, up to the tri-radio R770. The T-series covers outdoor and semi-exposed sites. The wall-mounted H-series suits hotel rooms, suites and student residences. It also provides wired ports behind the plate. Wi-Fi 6 models such as the R350 and R550 remain in the range where they are the sensible fit.

What makes a RUCKUS access point behave differently in a difficult building is the antenna. BeamFlex is a patented adaptive antenna array. It steers the signal toward the client rather than radiating evenly in every direction. That is why RUCKUS tends to hold a usable connection where a fixed-antenna access point drops it. We have written more on what makes the RUCKUS access point design different.

RUCKUS ICX switching

RUCKUS ICX switch family for wired and wireless networking - ICX 8200, ICX 7550, ICX 8100 and ICX 7850

The wired half of your wired and wireless network is the RUCKUS ICX family. It descends from the Foundry FastIron platform and inherits its non-blocking, low-latency architecture. The range starts with entry-level Layer 2 access on the ICX 8100 and the roomier ICX 8200. Mid-range access and aggregation sit on the ICX 7550. The ICX 7850 takes core and aggregation duty with 100 GbE. A Pro AV variant also exists, with preconfigured profiles for multicast and traffic prioritization. It suits sites running AV over IP.

Two capabilities matter particularly for smaller and multi-site organizations. ICX switches stack over high-speed fiber, including over long distances. Switches in different closets — or different buildings — then operate as one logical system, with one configuration to manage. Full PoE++ with multigigabit ports matters too. The switch can feed modern access points directly, without a separate estate of injectors.

One platform for wired and wireless networking

Managing switches in one tool and wireless in another is how small faults turn into long outages. RUCKUS One brings both onto a single cloud dashboard. Its AI-driven assurance flags degradation and recommends fixes, rather than waiting for somebody to call. Where the controller has to stay on premises, SmartZone runs as a physical or virtual appliance. For a single small site, Unleashed runs the wireless with no controller at all.

We will tell you which of the three fits, and it is not automatically the cloud one. Our write-up on RUCKUS network management goes through the options in more detail.

Secure access, not just coverage

Coverage is the easy half of wireless networking. The harder half is who gets on, and what they can reach once they are on. You also need to prove it afterwards. We separate staff, guest, voice and device traffic properly. Corporate devices get certificate-based onboarding, not a shared passphrase on a whiteboard. IoT and building systems stay off the network your finance team uses. Is the perimeter in scope too? Then this joins up with our Sophos firewall work and the wider cyber security practice.

Already running Cisco?

The usual objection to changing switch vendor is retraining, and it is a smaller problem here than people expect. The RUCKUS CLI closely mirrors Cisco IOS, so most of what your team already knows carries over. Both also interoperate over standard protocols. You can therefore migrate closet by closet rather than over a single weekend. We covered this in detail in moving from Cisco IOS to RUCKUS.

How a wired and wireless networking project runs

Assess. Site survey and RF measurement. An inventory of existing switching, cabling and uplinks. A plain statement of what is failing today.

Design. Access point placement and count. Channel and power plan. Switch sizing and PoE budget. VLAN and SSID structure, plus the management platform choice.

Deploy. Staged configuration. Cutover planned around your hours rather than ours. Post-installation validation walked through the actual space, not signed off from a dashboard.

Manage. Monitoring, firmware, configuration backups and capacity review, so the network stays in the state we left it in.

Ongoing wired and wireless networking support

A network is not finished at handover. Firmware moves, client devices change, people connect things nobody told you about, and the office rearranges its furniture. Under our managed agreements we monitor and maintain the network alongside the rest of your estate. Our support desk is open from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm Pacific, seven days a week. We are on site across Metro Vancouver, and we support clients across Canada, coast to coast.

OPUS Consulting Group is a RUCKUS Networks Elite Partner

Why businesses buy RUCKUS through OPUS

Elite Partner status means certifications our consultants maintain and lab access we use to test before we deploy. It also means vendor escalation lines we can pick up on your behalf, and preferred pricing. What it means in practice is simpler: we are vendor-aligned, not vendor-captive. If your building does not need the top of the range, we will say so. If RUCKUS is the wrong answer for a particular site, we will say that too.

RUCKUS itself is now part of Belden, with more than 400 patents issued and over 172,000 customers worldwide. You find it in exactly the environments that break ordinary Wi-Fi. Schools and campuses, hotels, multi-dwelling residential, warehousing and logistics, healthcare, professional AV and large public venues.

Common questions

Do we have to replace the switching and the Wi-Fi at the same time? No. Most clients do one first. If the Wi-Fi is the pain, we confirm the existing switching can power and feed new access points. You can then phase the switching later.

Can you reuse our existing cabling? Often, yes — and we test it rather than assume. Some runs will not support what you need. We tell you which ones, and why, before anything is ordered.

Do we need Wi-Fi 7? Not always. Wi-Fi 6 access points are still in the range and still appropriate for plenty of sites. Placement, channel planning and the switch underneath usually matter more than the generation on the box.

Can you manage the network we already have? Yes. We take over existing RUCKUS estates and run them as a managed wired and wireless network. We will also assess a non-RUCKUS network and tell you honestly whether it needs replacing or simply needs running properly.
