Why the neural processing unit (NPU) now matters in business laptops, and how Dell, Lenovo, Dynabook and Surface compare.

For years, the laptop spec sheet that mattered was simple: processor speed, memory, and storage. Now there is a new line item that deserves a manager’s attention — the NPU, or neural processing unit. It has quietly become standard on business machines from every major brand. Better still, the software your team uses every day is increasingly built to take advantage of it. So here is what an NPU is, why it matters for your business, and how the devices you are most likely to buy — from Dell, Lenovo, Dynabook and Microsoft Surface — compare.
A modern laptop has long had two main “brains.” The CPU handles general work, and the GPU handles graphics. The neural processing unit adds a third, purpose-built brain. It does one thing extremely well: the repetitive math behind artificial intelligence.
Think of it as adding a specialist to a team of generalists. The CPU can do AI work. However, that is like asking your best all-rounder to take on a highly specialized job — possible, but slow and draining. By contrast, the NPU handles that AI work faster and on far less power. And that matters a great deal for a device running on battery.
Performance is measured in TOPS, or trillions of operations per second. Today the headline number is 40-plus TOPS, the bar Microsoft set for its “Copilot+ PC” badge. Current chips clear it comfortably. For example, Intel’s Core Ultra (Series 2) runs around 48 TOPS, AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 around 50 TOPS, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X around 45 TOPS.
You do not need to follow chip roadmaps to see the business case. A few things make the NPU worth attention at purchasing time:
“Copilot+ PC” is Microsoft’s label for machines that meet a minimum AI specification. That means a neural processing unit of at least 40 TOPS, plus at least 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. So if a device carries the Copilot+ badge, you know it has the horsepower for the current generation of on-device AI features, such as Recall, Cocreator, and smarter search. Ultimately, treat it as the floor for any new business purchase you expect to keep for several years.
The good news is simple. Every brand most businesses already buy now offers NPU-equipped, Copilot+ machines, usually with a choice of Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm inside. Here is the lay of the land.
Dell offers a full portfolio of Copilot+ business laptops. The Latitude 7455 is the premium option: a 14-inch, Snapdragon-powered ultraportable rated for up to 21 hours of battery. Meanwhile, the Latitude 5455 covers the mainstream. In early 2026, Dell refreshed and renamed its commercial range under new “Dell Pro” branding. The through-line stays the same, though — AI-ready hardware with enterprise security and manageability built in.
Lenovo gives the widest spread of choices, with Copilot+ models across Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. On the business side, the ThinkPad T14s (Snapdragon X Elite) is a natural fleet pick. Lenovo has also extended NPUs into desktops: its ThinkCentre line now offers AMD Ryzen AI processors. So if you want one vendor that can match a chip to each use case, Lenovo fits.
Dynabook, the former Toshiba laptop business, targets exactly the durable, business-first buyer. Its Portégé Z40L-N is an Intel Core Ultra (Series 2 “Lunar Lake”) Copilot+ machine that weighs about 2.2 lbs and meets MIL-STD-810H durability testing. Notably for IT teams, it also has a user-serviceable battery, which simplifies repairs and extends usable life. Copilot-ready Portégé and Tecra models round out the range for broader fleets.
Microsoft’s own Surface Pro and Surface Laptop for Business come as Copilot+ machines, with a choice of Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) or Snapdragon. Microsoft cites meaningful real-world gains versus the older Surface Laptop 5, including markedly better multitasking and far longer battery life on Teams calls. In addition, a 2026 refresh added a 12-inch Surface Pro and a 13-inch Surface Laptop on Snapdragon X Plus, with a 45-TOPS NPU. Because they are Microsoft’s reference designs, Surface devices tend to receive the newest Windows AI features first.
Of course, you do not need to rip out working laptops to chase AI. But if you are planning a refresh, standardizing new purchases on Copilot+, NPU-equipped machines is the sensible default. It costs little or nothing extra today on business models, and it keeps your fleet current for the features your team will expect tomorrow. The practical questions are the familiar ones: which brand fits your management and security setup, which processor suits each role, and how to phase the rollout without disrupting people.
